Rotation and the wind momentum–luminosity relation for extragalactic distances

چکیده

The effects of axial stellar rotation on the wind–momentum relation (WLR) for determining the extragalactic distances are investigated. Despite the fact that the mass loss rates grow quite a lot with rotation, remarkably the effects on the WLR are found to be very small on the average. As an example, for an average orientation angle between the rotation axis and the line of sight, the luminosity would be overestimated by 5.9 % for a star rotating at 90% of its break–up rotational velocity. Different orientation angles between the rotation axis and the line of sight produce some limited scatter.

Spectroscopic Analyses of Massive Blue Stars (galactic or Extragalactic)

We review recent advances in our understanding of massive stars through the analysis of their spectra. Improvements in model atmospheres and analysis methods are briefly discussed. Results obtained for stars in the Local Group are compared and the present status of different open questions, like the temperature scale of OB stars, the Wind Momentum-Luminosity Relation or the stellar rotation, is...

Blue supergiant stars can be exceptionally bright objects in the optical, making them prime targets for the determination of extragalactic distances. I describe how their photometric and spectroscopic properties can be calibrated to provide a measurement of their luminosity. I first review two well-known techniques, the luminosity of the brightest blue supergiants and, with the aid of recent sp...

Stellar Spectroscopy Far beyond the Local Group

Multi-object spectroscopic observations of blue supergiants in NGC 3621, a spiral galaxy at a distance of 6.7 Mpc, carried out with the ESO VLT and FORS are presented. We demonstrate the feasibility of quantitative stellar spectroscopy at distances approaching a ten-fold increase over previous investigations by determining chemical composition, stellar parameters, reddening, extinction and wind...

The Luminosity-Metallicity Relation, Effective Yields, and Metal Loss in Spiral and Irregular Galaxies

I present results on the correlation between galaxy mass, luminosity, and metallicity for a sample of spiral and irregular galaxies having well-measured abundance profiles, distances, and rotation speeds. Additional data for low surface brightness galaxies from the literature are also included for comparison. These data are combined to study the metallicity-luminosity and metallicityrotation sp...

Metallicity Effects on the Modified Wind Momentum of Cspn

Recent investigations on the central stars of planetary nebulae (CSPN) indicate that the masses based on model atmospheres can be much larger than the masses derived from theoretical mass-luminosity relations. Also, the dispersion in the relation between the modified wind momentum and the luminosity depends on the mass spread of the CSPN, and is larger than observed in massive hot stars. Since ...
